Since I launched my campaign a whole two days ago by the unveiling of my I-10 billboard and this website, I have received numerous calls of support and am happy to report two very generous contributions in the mail yesterday. Several supporters have, of their own accord, started to raise money for me. Some of the questions I received from them were about the form of the contribution. I cannot accept corpporate checks. If you remember, my opponent indicted Luis Aguilar when he was running against Judge Dinsmoor for the 120th for having mistakenly deposited a small (around $120.00) corporate contribution into his campaign account.
The name of the game here is to raise as much money as fast as possible and avoid being indicted!
Here are some of the comments I have received on the street, in the courthouse, in restaurants, in the jail, in church and on the phone:
-Thank God you are running!
-It's over due time for a change.
-He needs to go; He's been in office way too long; How many decades has it been anyway?
-When he ran against Steve Simmons he promised to leave after two terms. What happened?
-Has he ever even been in private practice? Does he know what it's like to have to balance a budget without going into the pockets of the taxpayer?
-I couldn't believe it when I heard the news. How can I help?
-When are you having a fundraiser?
-When can I start giving you money? Is there a limit?
-I almost careened off the freeway when I saw your billboard, I was so happy.
-With you in office the real crooks and thieves will be on the run!
-Your website is so informative I can't wait to see what comes next.
-Theresa is going to be the next DA.
-When can you come speak to our group? I'll arrange it.
-Do you think your opponent has the guts to debate you?
-I can't wait to have an honest DA in office! What does that even feel like?
-If Theresa is running, it's because it's the right thing to do. She's definitely not doing it for the money or for ego.
Let me answer a few of these questions. As far as campaign contributions go, you can contribute now and in a few days you will able be to contribute directly through this website. You can mail your contribution to 300 E. Main St., Suite 1136, El Paso, TX 79901 or call me at 565-3550 and I will make arrangements to have it picked up. According to my research, there is no limit on money contributions. I would like to stress that any contribution is highly welcomed. Many a grass root campaign (and that is what this is) has been won with twenty, ten, and five dollar contributions and several pairs of shoe leather.
My opponent has been in office for over 14 years. He is in the middle of his fourth term. At the end of this term, he will have been in 16 years and if he is re-elecetd it will be twenty years. As far as what happened to his initial promise to not seek more than two terms, you can draw your own conclusions as to what happened to that promise and many others.
The much aniticipated debates. For those of you who know me, you know that I have always been willing to discuss my positions on the issues and to take them on in the face of great opposition. On the other hand, my opponent has insulated himself in a shroud of secrecy and onion-like layers of protective staff. In his fear of facing the legal chaos he has created, he has used the services of a battery of county (THAT'S RIGHT. Our tax dollars again) paid employees to avoid answering questions on his policies as they affect all of us. However, publicly he has said he will answer for his policies in any courtroom and any place. I guess this promise has gone the way the two term promise has gone.
So yes, absolutely, I'm availabe for debates. And I keep my promises.
